I love tea like I love chocolate and Champagne! There’s always a pot on my counter and a selection in my cupboard that would rival any tea shop. I don’t leave any trip home without spending an obscene amount of money at my favourite tea shop, and cramming those tea canisters into every nook and cranny of my suitcase. You’d think that would hold me over, but I often find myself ordering the latest flavours to my parents house and leaving my poor Mom with the dirty work of shipping it to me overseas. In short, I’m a self professed tea floozy.
With an upcoming family trip to China, I knew we needed to visit at least one tea house while we were in Hong Kong. I arranged for us to do a tea tasting and workshop with Vivian at MingCha.
I’m not sure if we were overly ambitious or naive, but we set off for a morning in a tea house with a 3 year old, a 1 year old, and no electronic devices to use as entertainment! Crazy right!?
As we entered the tea house, my first move was to give the place a once over to see just how much damage my kids could potentially do in the room. I scouted out a quiet corner and was about to pull out the colouring books, snacks and stickers when Vivian assured me that there was nothing to worry about and that she would love to have the kids involved in the tasting. A family friendly tea house; I felt myself relax before I even had my first sip of tea.Vivian captured our daughters’ attention with her ‘magic’ flower blossom teas and was happy to involve our girls as much as possible. When they’d had enough of our tea party there were even a few toys and snacks brought out by the staff to keep them happy, while we continued with our workshop. A win-win!We learned about 5 different kinds of teas, while tasting each along the way. If that wasn’t wonderful enough, I then heard the words, “tea pairing” and “chocolate”. Hello heaven! Not only did we pair tea with chocolate, but we also were treated to toast with honey and rose petals; a surprisingly delicious combination! If you have the slightest interest in tea, tea culture, or you just want to try something different on your visit to Hong Kong. I recommend embracing your inner tea floozy, and checking out MingCha tea house. It’s kid friendly, the staff is very kind and they even encourage you to slurp your tea. No stuffiness here! And for those who are curious….we made it out of there with our two tiny tea-partiers and not a single tea cup broken. Victory was ours!
Thank you to MingCha for welcoming us as guests. All opinions are my own.
