Sometimes a hotel is more than just a place to rest your head. Sometimes the building comes with a story. Sometimes there’s history in the walls of the room where you sleep.
This was exactly the case of the Storchen Zurich.
The building itself was first mentioned in tax record in 1357. 100 years later it was being used as an inn to house royalty and distinguished guests.
It was built on the banks of the river Limmat, right beside the narrowest part of the river. This meant that the first bridge on the river was built right beside the hotel. Prime location!
Today you’ll still find that it’s a prime location. With restaurants and terraces lining the river, there’s no shortage of places to stop and enjoy the view. The hotel restaurant is perfectly situated in the quiet square out front of the hotel, surrounded with quaint streets and high end shops that you can happily get lost exploring.Standard rooms in this hotel go for about €360-€670 per night ($475-$925) depending on the day of the week and the season. Our room at the Storchen was quaint with plenty of space for the four of us.We had amazing views out our windows, just proving again that this building was built in the perfect location! We were left a lovely welcome treat waiting for us when we arrived. After being out exploring, when we got back from dinner, we put the kids to bed around 8:45. Sadly, turn down service had not arrived yet, so no bed time chocolate for me, but we found a message under our door in the morning that they came by at 8:45. We must have just missed them. It was made up for in the morning when we arrived at breakfast though. We went downstairs to the breakfast room to find a beautiful space with river-front seating. A few other favourites: fresh squeezed orange juice and prosecco to go with it, honeycombs and fresh fruit salad. My daughters were promptly delivered the little stork stuffed animals that must have been meant to be put on their beds last night. They couldn’t have been happier to have their new feathered friends join us for breakfast. It truly was the breakfast of champions.
And with that we were on our way for a full day of exploring the wonderful city of Zurich that was right on our doorstep.
Thank you to the Storchen Zurich for hosting us as guest. All opinions are my own.
