Canadian Expat Mom

Call For Submissions: Once Upon An Expat

Have you been brave enough to pack up your life and move to another country.

Did you love it? Did you hate it? Was it the greatest adventure of your life?

We want to hear from you!Once Upon An Expat

Canadian Expat Mom is publishing an anthology of the expat tales that will have you laughing, crying, and wanting to pack(or unpack) your bags.

What we’re looking for:

Original stories on expat life: the good stuff, the bad stuff, and everything in between.  Starting life over in a new country can be a roller coaster of emotions and excitement. Culture shock, and language barriers can turn a task as simple as buying groceries into an enormous production. Send in your happiest, saddest, most outrageous, or entertaining story about expat life.

Is there one specific story that your friends and family back home love to hear about your life abroad? An ‘a-ha’ moment, something funny about the country you live in, a struggle you’ve had while adjusting, a life changing moment, an adventure, your most intense culture shock experience, or reverse culture shock: these are the stories we’re looking for. Feel free to submit more than one!

Original content is preferred, but exceptions may be made if we love it!

How long?

800-3000 words

Who?

Approximately 35 writers will be featured in this anthology, and in true expat fashion they’ll be chosen from across the globe.  Each author will have a chance to gain exposure by being published internationally in both paperback and ebook, with a short bio included in the book. Please note that author royalties for this book will be donated to an international children’s literacy charity.

When:

Deadline for submissions will be February 15, 2016, with hopes of a summer publication.

No particular angle, we just want to feel something-happy, sad, entertained…just not bored! 😉 And of course it’s still okay if you’re still abroad, you’re an expat! 🙂 Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Lisa — a great idea! I am very new to blogging and writing and very unsure of submissions but I do have an expat essay I would like to submit. I think you said this would be published? Thanks for any feedback.

    Hi,
Just for me to be sure I’m clear on the angle, if for example, someone had lived in a foreign country for two years and was going to submit something to you, I imagine you probably prefer one narrowed down story (incident) from those two years, versus an overview of joys and struggles of the whole two years, right?

Hi Chandi, You are correct; one narrowed story would make for a better read. But if the way your story plays out happens to cover the span of our expat that is a possibility as well. Good luck! You can email me if you have any further questions! 🙂

Hi Lisa! Thank you so much for checking out my blog and the personal invite to submit. I actually had heard about your anthology through Beyond Your Blog and have had Feb. 15 marked on my calendar for a couple of weeks. I love your blog, the content, design, layout…everything and will absolutely be submitting something for your consideration.

Expat life in general, but if that happens to include motherhood, that’s fine. Looking forward to hearing from you! 🙂

you know what I realized, I hit “reply” on the email you sent me… but that goes to a “don’t reply” address (which I had not noticed!)

Hi Lisa! I sent you an email yesterday with my submission. Just wanted to check that you received it ok. Thanks! Katie

Hey Lisa–I was an expat (Dubai-London) for a few years but am now back in the US. Does that count or does one still need to be an expat? Also, somewhere I read that more than one submission is also ok? Maybe I read it on Beyond Your Blog? Thanks for confirming!
