If there’s one thing I have learned from living in so many different countries over the past decade is that community can make all the difference. If you’ve got the right people in your life you can live and be happy anywhere in the world. Ask me how I know!
The joy of expat life is that there are often communities and groups for newcomers already in place. I’ve found that the more ‘difficult’ a place is to live, the stronger the community becomes. You make your own fun and that’s what can really be a game-changer in creating a new life for yourself.
When I moved back to Calgary even though I’d already lived here before and had some old friends, I vowed to myself that I would treat this move like another expat and make the most of my ‘new’ life here, just as I had in our moves before.
I’ve always been a bit of a social butterfly(awkward adolescence aside)….in the South of France I headed up the English-speaking playgroup, in Congo I sat on the board of the international association and worked on the ‘nights out’ team(how fitting).
Here in Calgary I wasn’t sure where to land. I wasn’t a foreigner to the country, and my kids were beyond baby-group age, yet I was longing to be a part of the women’s groups that I’d become accustomed to. There were women’s brunches, and markets that I attended and I started making friends that way. But I still wanted community, and new people arriving in Calgary were starting to message me about where the ‘women’s group’ was.
If you build it, they will come. I thought to myself.
But then pushed it out of my mind….until the weeks turned to months and idea was running so quickly through my mind that it started keeping me up at night.
I love ladies night out, I love meeting new people, I love wine, and I love feeling like I’m being productive with my time.
What if there was a community where I could get together with like-minded women while learning something, getting inspired, and building community….as a bonus, add wine!
If you build it they will come.
What have I got to lose, right? Without carrying on further, I present:
Wine, Women & Well-Being, a place to build community and empower women with speakers and workshops so we can become the best versions of ourselves…one sip at a time! What’s not to love about that!
No one really likes going first, so I’ll do that job. For the first event I’ll be sharing my personal story on change. ‘The Fearless First-Step’ was written for the Fearless Women’s Summit coming to Calgary, but (sshhhhhh)you can hear it here first!
In the months that follow watch for speakers and workshops ranging from motivation, nutrition, fitness, food and fiance. If you’re local to Calgary, join us(!!!) and if you know someone who excels in their field, send them my way to talk about being featured as a presenter.
Wine, Women & Well-Being…what a great way to spend a week-night!

Kudos to you for taking on the challenge. Having lived long-term in 9 countries (including Indonesia and Ghana) I know all about finding your ‘tribe’ to help you live happily in a foreign country. Fortunately I have always been able to do that. I agree with what you said: ” I’ve found that the more ‘difficult’ a place is to live, the stronger the community becomes.” Oh, the fun things we had to organize to keep us all entertained! As for the wine, I now live in a ‘wine lake’ in the Languedoc in France, so no shortage of lovely sips. Enjoy your weekend!
